We’re Kyle and Dayna.
We built Breadcrumb out of grief. Our sister-in-law passed away suddenly at the age of 36, leaving behind Dayna’s brother and his young family. Then Kyle’s father passed away and left behind a lot of unknowns due to short term memory loss from a past aneurysm. These tragedies reshaped or perspective overnight and reminded us to truly live every day as if it’s our last.
And part of that meant we needed to do some death planning (which we really think should be called life documenting). We knew it was more than just leaving a will; it involved leaving behind the pieces of our life that others might need to pick up… a breadcrumb trail to follow. It’s so important for people to know how you make your mortgage payments, what insurance policies exist, where you have back accounts, passwords needed to close accounts and monitor for fraud, how to access devices, and all the things that may be delegated to someone in a will, but aren’t documented on how to access.
So we designed a program that allows us to keep others from dealing with death’s scavenger hunt. A way to securely store all the breadcrumbs – digitally- for your loved ones. You never know what tomorrow brings and which day will be your last, but it’s the living who suffer. We hope Breadcrumb gives your loved ones the time they need to grieve (or move quickly into action in the event of a disappearance). It’s a simple, comprehensive solution to a problem that isn’t talked about nearly enough and you may not even know exist.

What is Breadcrumb?
Breadcrumb is a cloud-based storage solution that houses all the information needed by your loved ones in the event of your death or disappearance.
Breadcrumb securely stores your data and allows the people you have identified as beneficiaries to retrieve your stored information upon proof of death or disappearance.
What type of information can I store?
You are prompted to store all types of information essential to managing your affairs once you’re gone. This includes a variety of important information from wills and life insurance policies to where you bank, how you pay your mortgage, and how to access your devices.
We also provide space to ensure your loved ones have everything they need to manage the ‘death admin’ that comes with losing a loved one. Information like how to take care of your pets (and plants); safe combinations; assets such as houses, boats, P.O. boxes, and storage units; and a generic section to keep a running list of any “other” information you want your loved ones to know.
Am I required to enter all information?
Our infrastructure is set up to allow you to control what information you provide for loved ones. We think it’s important to give people a starting point – so even if you don’t want to enter login info or personal data for loved ones, give them information on where to look.
For example, add the name of all banks you hold accounts at, where you finance your car, and who holds your mortgage. They can then reach out to the companies as they close out your affairs. You choose how detailed of a breadcrumb trail you’d like to leave.
What happens to my data after I cancel my account?
Your data is deleted 30 days after your subscription ends. If you would like your data deleted prior to the end of your subscription, please contact hello@breadcrumbdigital.org.
How will people know I have an account?
When you add someone as a beneficiary, we automatically notify them that they are a beneficiary for your Breadcrumb account. They’ll learn what Breadcrumb is and how to retrieve your information should something happen to you.
What happens once I die or go missing?
We take our subscriber security seriously and verify your death and proof of identity for your beneficiary. Here’s what will happen:
1. Your bereaved will complete the retrieve form and a member of our team will reach out.
2. They will be required to provide a death certificate or missing person’s report.
3. We will verify their identity, then an encrypted report will be emailed to them organizing all of the information you provide.
Please be mindful that we are set up with zero-knowledge architecture. That means we can’t view your data or redirect where your data is sent. Your breadcrumbs can only be sent to the email address you provide for a beneficiary.
